A round-up of my most memorable and recent content consumption. Not that you asked.
A small Nora Ephron marathon: You’ve Got Mail followed by Sleepless in Seattle. Both are very dated and charming. I like You’ve Got Mail as a time capsule of the early internet: using AOL, the strangely extraterrestrial sound of dial-up, and being unable to stalk your virtual friends via social media. I think the best thing about Sleepless in Seattle is Meg Ryan’s hair. I mean, come on:
She is angelic and also this is what happens to me sometimes when I watch movies from (the 80s and) the 90s: I get obsessed with the lewks. See Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral:
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy: A memoir by the former actor and singer you may know from iCarly. With dark humor, she describes the horrors of being a child actor and her relationship with her abusive mother. I devoured the book and am left feeling sad about all she had to endure and happy for where she’s ended up. The annoying writer in me is saying the writing could’ve been better but I think some stories just need to be told and as long as the writing isn’t distracting, it’s doing its job. Also, let’s take a moment to commend the brilliant marketing:
Even if you’ve never heard of her, you’re intrigued.
How to with John Wilson: Fans of Nathan Fielder, unite. It’s a show about seeing the strange magic in the details of everyday life, and about what people will tell you (a lot, everything?) if you give them the chance. Here’s a taste:
Dates rolled in coconut: The texture of fudge, the hand feel of an eraser, the taste of paradise. Need I say more?
